BUILT FROM A GARAGE, NOT A BOARDROOM
Celtic Tuning was founded in 2004.
Started from a highway civil engineer who spent his life growing up around cars, learning to strip and rebuild them alongside his dad long before engine management systems were even a thing. When engine management systems hit the market, it was not about power from the outset; it was understanding how these new systems controlled the engine and exactly what control they had.
Working in his own time, he began to reverse engineer the software running on his own car, starting with understanding the structure of the software, what maps did what, along with the scaling factors of each map. Initially developing software on his own vehicle and understanding how to increase its performance, and crucially, finding out where the manufacturer had restricted the performance. As his understanding grew and the performance of his car showed others around him exactly what was achievable, the interest around him grew and word spread.
In the early years, much of the work was educating customers about what ECU remapping actually was. Engine management systems had only really just become a mainstream part of how cars were designed and built. There were only two other companies in the UK at the time, and it certainly was not an easy industry to get into.
What began as a genuine technical curiosity — understanding what these new systems were actually doing — gradually became a business built entirely on that foundation. There were no shortcuts and no template to follow. Every piece of knowledge was earned through direct experience with the vehicles, the software and the results. That approach has shaped everything Celtic Tuning has become.
Celtic Tuning was incorporated as a limited company in 2010 and has grown steadily since. From a back-street garage through to a large unit in Roche, Cornwall, then into its current purpose-built performance centre in Newquay, with two dedicated dyno cells.
In 2020, a second facility was opened in Derby to provide a more central location for development vehicles and customers across the UK.
THE PROCESS THAT SEPARATES SERIOUS TUNING FROM SHORTCUTS
Our team combines years of hands-on ECU development with formal manufacturer training. Our team includes BMW-trained mechanical technicians who bring factory-level knowledge of engine construction to every calibration we write.
Before any boost or fuelling is altered, our engineers work through the ECU's operating strategy. Using vehicles' DAMOS data and Funktionrahmen (the manufacturer's documentation that defines the ECU control strategy), we identify where factory limitations are preventing the engine from producing the power it is currently capable of.
The goal at this point is to allow the maximum output from the existing fuelling and boost levels before we start to make alterations to these areas.
THE PROCESS
Read
The vehicle's ECU software is read from the control unit – This can be via the OBD port, bench pin-out or even a direct connection to the board.
Reverse Engineer
Using DAMOS and Funktionrahmen, the software control strategy is understood to ascertain where and how the engine is being held back.
Write
The new calibration is written in-house. Celtic Tuning does not purchase files, we develop all software directly.
Dyno & Log
The file, once loaded to the ECU, is run on our rolling roads. We then record the live data such as boost pressure, fuel pressure, exhaust gas temperatures, lambda, N75 duty cycle, ignition advance and knock.
Refine
The calibration is refined until our logs and data outputs confirm that the results are both safe and optimal. For in-house development vehicles, we will extend this stage to high-speed testing at circuits such as Silverstone and the Nürburgring to ensure the performance holds under sustained load with no limps.

Celtic Tuning covers an exceptionally wide range of vehicles from passenger cars, light vans, HGV and commercial vehicles to agricultural and plant machinery, marine engines and motorsport applications. Our customer base is just as broad, from everyday drivers wanting smoother, more responsive performance through to performance enthusiasts running full custom hardware setups and fleet operators trying to find fuel efficiencies in their budgets.
We have completed major fleet installations for organisations such as Cormac and Kelly Services. We regularly work on high-end performance vehicles such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren and have appeared on National Geographic's Supercar Mega build series, Wheeler Dealers, Auto Italia magazine and EVO magazine, as well as others.
Our dealer network spans over 200 approved partners across 35 countries. Entry to our dealer network is not automatic – every dealer is assessed for diagnostic capability and mechanical knowledge. We do not distribute our software to companies that do not know how to support it.

Every vehicle that comes through our doors is assessed before any tuning takes place. We ensure oil and coolant levels are correct, tyre condition and general mechanical health. Where a vehicle is not in a condition we are satisfied with, we will let the customer know and advise against tuning. That standard has been in place since day one and is not something we will compromise.
