What about insurance?

An ECU remap can indeed affect your car insurance. It is your legal responsibility to disclose your remap to your insurer, regardless of whether they can or cannot detect it. Non-declarations are considered material misrepresentations, which can invalidate your policy entirely, and in the event of a claim, can leave you personally liable for costs.

In real terms, the effect on your premium varies between insurance companies and how they measure risk. Some companies treat it as any other performance modification and apply a small premium, some understand the benefit of an ECU remap and apply no premium increase, and others may decline to offer insurance at all.

We have worked with insurance brokers such as Adrian Flux over the years to help customers find a solution right for them, and an ECU remap doesn’t have to significantly increase your premium.

Overall, it is pretty straightforward. Declare your ECU remap. The consequences of non-disclosure outweigh the small premium saving.
