Is ECU remapping legal in the UK?

ECU remapping is legal to complete in the UK. There is no legislation that prevents the modification of a vehicle’s ECU. Millions of vehicles have been remapped without any legal issues.

However, there are some caveats to ensure that you stay on the right side of the law. You are legally required to inform your insurance company of any modification made to your vehicle, which does indeed include ECU remaps. Failure to disclose could invalidate your insurance policy, which is required to drive on public highways.

It is also worth noting that an ECU remap for performance or economy improvements is fine, but an ECU remap for emission delete software is illegal for use on public highways. In the UK, under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, vehicles found to have had emissions equipment removed can face fines and may be deemed unroadworthy.

ECU remap companies do not have to declare or inform authorities of every vehicle that is completed, but the obligation to notify insurers and maintain MOT standards is down to the end user.
